Lucía Sanmartín (Valencia, 1975) paints the same half hour of the evening, over and over, from a terrace above the port of Valencia where she has watched the sun go down most nights for fifteen years. Tide Table is her first diptych: two canvases painted a year apart, hung with a narrow gap between them so the bands of colour almost line up but never quite do — a small, deliberate disagreement between two evenings on the same coast. She began the second panel after finding her late father's handwritten tide tables for the port, and the title is the only piece of text in the whole series.
