Lucía Sanmartín (Valencia, 1975) paints the same half hour of the evening, over and over, from a terrace above the port of Valencia where she has watched the sun go down most nights for fifteen years. Half Past Seven is the largest canvas she has shown: nine thin bands of acrylic, each one glazed three or four times until the colour underneath still shows through, the way real dusk light keeps changing the colour of the sea while you watch it. She is the gallery's most established artist and the only one who does not title her work after the fact — the clock time is written on the back of every canvas the day she starts it.
