Aiko Rendell (Lisbon, 1987) studied acoustics before she studied painting, and it shows: her ink drawings trace the standing-wave patterns a metal plate makes when a violin bow is drawn across its edge — the same Chladni figures used in physics classrooms, redrawn by hand at the speed the ink allows rather than the speed the plate vibrates. Resonance (Alpha) is the first and densest sheet in the pair shown here, recording a higher, more agitated frequency than its companion. Rendell works in sepia rather than her usual indigo for the higher notes, a convention she has kept since her first show in Lisbon and has never fully explained.
